With 40 miles to go, a southwest storm began brewing. Winds were gusting from 28 knots to 35 knots causing 6 foot sea waves on a 10 foot swell. Team Giulietta Racing sponsored by Marina de Cascais and Mauri Pro Sailing had a great start at the VIII Regata Clube de Naval de Cascais in Portugal. An obstacle ran their way when they ripped the jib luff tape on the pre-start hoist. On the second tack, the jib sheet came undone resulting in more time lost. Even with these barriers, Team Giulietta Racing finished 2nd in real time behind a 65 foot Shipman 63, and placed 3rd on corrected time.

Congratulations to Alex and crew on a great result this past weekend! Mauri Pro Sailing is proud to be a sponsor for Team Giulietta Racing and is looking forward to their future events.

To make the story short, a couple of days prior to the regatta I drove 59 hours from Dallas to Long Island (back and forward, a touch and go trip) to pick up hull #107. This was the only way we will make it to the regatta. At the beginning the idea sounded crazy but now a couple of days later I look back and all the effort was so worthy.

"It has been a long time since I had so much fun at racing sailboats!"

On the first day, races where postponed and rather that just sit and wait, the Texas Viper group (which is really crazy) pop up the blender and start having drinks like it was the end of the planet. From there, it was pure FUN! 4 races in shifty 8 to 12 knots, lots of lead changes, 4 winners in four races... What else can you ask for? Ok, maybe a couple of big swells for downwind surfing but it cannot always be perfect, right?

Sailing with Giacomo, my 13 year old son and Rod Favela (145 lbs) meant that we will need to hike extra hard and since it was over 11 years since the last time I had to hike it, it had been painful at times but we always end up with a smile. How did we manage to win the regatta?.. I don't know and I will leave it for later, in the meantime, I am looking forward to the next Viper event: Wurfest Regatta (San Antonio, TX).

Crotch Straps & Thigh Straps – Why they Matter

Recent research by UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency confirms why the hated crotch strap is necessary. It can stop a badly-adjusted lifejacket from riding up over your head and mouth when it inflates in water.

The Deckvest’s double-buckle helps reduce this risk by making chest belt adjustment easy and instinctive, but for human error reasons, Deckvest owners are still advised to use the special thigh strap which Spinlock provide.

Deckvest are also tested and approved with and without the thigh straps.

Sailing with the Mauri Pro Sailing Team

I joined the Texas A&M Sailing Team in the fall of 2009, racing 420s in the Southeast Intercollegiate Sailing Conference. This is the beginning of my competitive sailing career. This past march, I was lucky to be invited to sail with the Mauri Pro Sailing team on their Farr 39 at Lake Texoma during Lakefest and several other regattas as part of their support program to local College Sailing Teams.

My experiences with Juan and his crew have taught me more about sailing in a few short weekends than I ever have understood before. By racing on bigger boats, I have begun to understand the uses and purpose of the fine-tuning adjustments.

My favorite aspect of racing with Mauri Pro Sailing is their sense of focus and determination to dominate on the race course. From the preparatory flag to the finishing gun, they mean business. I have learned that each race is a new start and you have to race yourself, push the limits and never take it easy. Even if you are in the lead, no place is guaranteed.

I love assisting on the bow. Each mark rounding with spinnaker hoists and peels leaves me with a huge adrenaline rush. I certainly get nervous every regatta when the gun goes off, but I am glad to be in such a wonderful learning environment.

I love Juan Mauri and his team welcoming personalities and immediately felt like part of their family, more than just a teammate. The international aspect of their crew really intrigues me because I have a Spanish background and plan to minor in Spanish. I am very thankful that I was introduced to the Mauri Pro Sailing crew and cannot wait for future regattas on board their boats, improving my sailing skills while developing lasting friendships.

This time, Ronstan has launched a new segment of furlers for free flying sails, the new RF45130 Orbit block with soft Dyneema loop becket and cam cleat, a spinnaker pole mast slide (ring type), new colour combinations for the c-cleat to easily code your control lines and a tough mini snap shackle ideal for halyards. The flying sail Ronstan Furlers are the result of an extended development program that have already been seen in action on number of high profile racing boats and have proven themselves to be extremely efficient and reliable. The Ronstan Spinnaker Pole Slide is the latest addition to the Series 25 T-Track range. It features a sleek, high performance composite construction. The grade 316 stainless steel ring and glass reinforced nylon body are designed for maximum strength. HARKEN: Vene Magazine Shoe Review

Recognizing that sailing shoes are a fiercely competitive, high-tech performance product, Finnish sailing magazine Vene recently conducted a thorough evaluation of 14 leading sailing shoes. They used subjective tests as well as EN certification tests* defined by CEN, an organization that creates standards for evaluating products and services in Europe.

Harken’s two entries took 2 of the top 3 spots. The Valencia received a recommendation and the Vortex was named the overall test winner.

The Testing Facility
Staff at the Finnish Occupational Health Institute (FIOH) performed the EN-based testing. FIOH is a specialist institute affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labor Office (ILO). They offer EN and ISO testing and certification for safety footwear. The Institute's research includes the evaluation of footwear slip resistance and methods of reducing accidents caused by slipping.

Grip Tests
These tests determined how well the different shoes gripped a wet gelcoat surface. Grip depends on a number of factors like the softness and type of sole material, how flat the sole is, and how well the tread pattern channels water out from under the shoe to maximize the sole’s contact with the deck.

Vene commented that Harken shoes have an unusual tread pattern that works very well on boat decks. This pattern centers independent 360-degree radial traction zones on the highest-pressure contact areas of the sole. As a result, wearers have grip in all directions regardless of whether they are on the balls of their feet or standing flat on the deck.

Methodology: Shoes were cleaned with 50% ethanol and lightly sanded with 400-grit sandpaper to simulate wear. Using specialized slip resistance measuring equipment, shoes were tested on a horizontal gelcoat surface wetted with a slippery soap-like solution (0.5% NaLS and 3.5% salt). Each test was performed 5 times on both the left and right shoes.

Subjective Tests
Vene compiled the following comments on the 14 pairs of shoes. The tester assessed features such as lace tension, fit, water retention, ankle support, and comfort.

Methodology: For the first test, the tester walked at 6 km/h for 5 minutes. He then climbed up and down steps to examine how the shoes dealt with twisting and flexing.

The XX0812 clutch is capable of holding and releasing loads up to 1800kgs. For 2010, the XX Mk3 has been re-engineered to exploit the very effective ‘Digital Jaw’ technology introduced this year (in the ZS Jammers) for holding blended-cover ropes.

Some of the latest performance ropes use polyester covers reinforced with high tensile Aramid, Technora or Dyneema fibre. The Mk3XX gives consistently excellent performance across the full spectrum of rope types and rigs, good for a 44’ X-Yacht up to a Grand Prix raceboat.

In developing the new XX gripping system, jaw weight has been reduced and jaw engagement and release reconfigured for minimal friction.
This helps streamline handling at the fast line speeds of 7+ metres/second now demanded for bigger race sail hoists using driven pit winches as in TP52 and Mini Maxi classes. A ‘straight-through’ rope alignment, parallel to the deck ensures neater side-mounting.

The Mk3 XX uses the clever ‘Grip Switch’ feature developed on the award-winning ZR Jammer. This ensures useful ‘hands-free’ protection for faster and more controlled winched release, say of asymmetric spinnaker sheets and mainsheets under full load. As with the ZR, ‘Release’ or ‘Lock’ modes are clearly indicated by the up or down position of the switch lever.

The new XX Digital Jaw set is removable in one piece for service and is available as an upgrade for existing Mk2 XX models.

Jerry Richards: The Mini Fastnet

We started late Friday afternoon beat 10 miles to Edistone light house in about 18 - 20 knots one reef in the main then spinnaker reached for 150 miles in 20 - 28 knots of wind all night maxing out at 17.5 knots and several broaches along the way. We rounded Needles Fairway obout 7 am having not seen another boat since it went dark. There was some concern. Sailing back west towards Plymouth we hadn`t seen another boat, perhaps we had missed a tide gate as we were the only boat that went out to sea in the early stage ofthe race. `O´ yes did I mention it had been blowing 25+ all night and now we would be beating in 28-40 knots mountains seas for the next 5 days. Crampons and an Ice pick would have been helpful!

After rounding the mark, sailing up wind for about 35 mins we came across a group of 5 boats reaching in the opposite direction so Conrad had made a great call going out to sea and we were in a good position. By late afternoon we were down to 3 reefs and the storm jib with huge seas I mean huge in a 21 foot boat. From time to time the seas would break over the boat as we climbed to the top of them. t was exhilarating and great to be back at sea after 16 years away.
